When a British actor wants to make it big in Hollywood, it is often the case that they will have to up roots and make the move to the US, taking their family with them. It is no surprise then, that over the years we have seen a British couple raising a child in America, who then goes on to develop and American accent, which is only natural.
British superstar Damian Lewis has enjoyed plenty of Hollywood success in his career, spending a lot of time working in the US, often taking his wife and two children with him. Now, Damian has admitted that, due to his American accent for his work, and spending so much time in America, his wife is worried about their children developing an American accent.
Lewis explained, "I don't do it [the accent] in front of them. They once spent a school term in the US and they started copying the accent in this comical, exaggerated way, elongating their vowels. I put a stop to that. My wife has a horror that the children will start talking American if we spend too much time out there."
He added, "I once did a US TV interview in my American accent and somehow it was seen by quite a few of my friends back in England. There were several irate text messages. 'You are British! Stop talking like an American!' It has become second nature to me now and I am happy to do it. That said, if I am with Brits I come out of it pretty quickly."
We think you need to reassure your wife and let her know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the American accent.
