When it comes to football or soccer or whatever you want to call it, when talk turns to the biggest teams in the world, one team that always comes to the forefront is Real Madrid and, while this season has not exactly been their most successful, there have been a few positives to take from it. One of the biggest positives, we feel, has been the performances as new boy James Rodriguez.
While we always find ourselves talking about Cristiano Ronaldo and how he is arguably the greatest player in the world, or Gareth Bale and how he has not had as good a season as many were hoping, we do not hear an awful lot said about James Rodriguez, which is very surprising. We feel that James Rodriguez is one of the most underrated stars to play for Real Madrid this season.
When Real Madrid signed James Rodriguez from Monaco for €80m, it was off the back of his impressive performances at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he played for Colombia as a very attacking player. However, since moving to Real Madrid, James Rodriguez has found himself playing in a much more defensive role, operating as more of a holding midfielder than an attacking one.
James Rodriguez has certainly shown his versatility, taking to this role with relative ease and still managing to perform to a very high standard. Over the course of the 2014-15 season, James Rodriguez scored 14 goals and made 15 assists for Real Madrid, in La Liga and the Champions League showing that, even in a much more defensive role, he can still come up with the goods.
We are big fans of James Rodriguez and even more so after the season he just had at Real Madrid. We look forward to seeing what he will bring next season and whether it will still be in that deeper role.
