New Minnesota Timberwolves General Manager Flip Saunders and All-Star Power Forward Kevin Love are getting along well. The two apparently share the same vision and and expectations for the team in the future. Last month they had launch together and went to the NBA draft night together. Among other topics they talked about leadership, workouts for the players and what the future holds for the franchise.
When asked what they talked about Saunders replied: “more than anything, just about the vision that we have and how we feel we’ve got to get there to reach that vision.”
“He’s very hopeful that I’ll be part of the team, a big part of the team, for many years to come,” Love said. “And I don’t see why he should think otherwise.”
The previous General Manager of the team David Kahn could never have such a relationship with Love as he focused more on Ricky Rubio as the cornerstone of the franchise rather than Love and saved the five-year contract extension for the young Spaniard. Saunders believes the player who makes Minnesota go is Kevin Love and not Ricky Rubio.
“He’s the only player that’s been an All-Star on that team since Kevin Garnett,” Saunders said. “So, because of that, what you want to do is you want make sure that he’s part of your foundation. And I’ve talked a lot with Ricky, but Ricky, of course, is overseas, is not quite as easy.”
Saunders did admit he would meet with Rubio also in early June and he will tell him he will direct his attention to the player he believes is the real star in Minnesota.
