Wimbledon 2015 got underway yesterday and what better way to open the biggest tournament in tennis, than to have the defending champion playing on Centre Court in front of a packed crowd on a beautiful sunny day. Many people are tipping Novak Djokovic to retain his Wimbledon title this year and, on his performance in his first round match, he definitely looks in top form.
Novak cruised through his first round match, beating the German number one Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4 6-4 6-4, booking his place in the second round against Jarkko Nieminen, who beat Lleyton Hewitt in his first round match. It is Novak's love of Wimbledon that makes him such a popular player at the event and which could see him defending his title following last years success.
Speaking after his relatively comfortable first round win, Djokovic explained, "This is the cradle of our sport, Centre Court. It doesn't get any better than Wimbledon. It was great to be back in Wimbledon, to play on the untouched grass and open the Wimbledon 2015 campaign on Centre Court as the defending champion."
As is always the case with Wimbledon, all the pressure will be on British star Andy Murray but, with Novak Djokovic playing the way he did in his first round match, we cannot see past the Serbian superstar. We expect that Novak will continue to go from strength to strength as the tournament progresses and, come the end of the two weeks he will once again be crowned Wimbledon champion.
